Softens the sun and cuts the glare without shutting the room down. You keep a bright room and lose the harshness. Privacy during the day, less so once the lights are on inside.
Keep the view
Solar and sheer
Blocks UV and heat while you can still see out. The right answer on a window with something worth looking at, where a conventional shade would trade the view for the comfort.
Lose the light
Room darkening and blackout
For bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms: anywhere daytime needs to feel like night. This is the shade that gets a baby down for an afternoon nap or lets a night-shift worker sleep.
Every one of those is available cordless, and most are available motorized. Cellular shades also come top-down / bottom-up, which lets you drop the shade from the top for daylight while keeping the bottom closed for privacy.

The one worth understanding
What the honeycomb in a cellular shade actually does
The cells are not decorative. A honeycomb shade traps a layer of air between the window and the room, and that trapped air is what buffers the heat, holding warmth in through a cold snap and holding the sun's heat out through an Atlanta summer. Double cell shades trap more of it than single cell and insulate correspondingly better.
That construction also decides the light. A single or double cell in a light filtering fabric lets a small amount of light through, cutting glare and the harshness of direct sun while still bathing the room in something soft. Room darkening and blackout fabrics take that the other way for bedrooms and media rooms. Same shade, same mechanism, completely different room.
The reason interior decorators reach for them is that they do all of the above in dozens of colors and textures, mount inside or outside the frame, and sit under a roman shade without fighting it. One detail people like: however many colors the range comes in, they all have a white backing, so the house reads uniform from the curb no matter what you chose room by room.
We are not going to quote you an energy-saving percentage. The figures circulating in this industry come from a study of a commercial high-rise with single-pane glass, and your house is not that. The mechanism is real and measurable; the number you have seen quoted is not yours.
Roller shades
Why a roller keeps more of the window than anything else
A roller shade collects a flat panel of fabric on a roller at the top of the window rather than stacking material as it rises. Nothing folds and nothing gathers, so when it is fully up there is very little of it left in the opening. It is the most pared-down profile of any blind or shade available.
That makes it the answer when the view is the point. If maximising what you can see out of a window matters more than what the treatment looks like when it is down, a roller wins, and solar fabric takes it further by holding the UV and the heat off while leaving the view intact.
The trade-off is character. A roller is a clean, modern, quiet thing; a roman shade or a cellular has more presence in the room. Which is right depends entirely on whether the window is something you look through or something you look at.
