The homes here

A fast-growing college town with an old heart

Auburn grew by more than three quarters between 2000 and 2020, and half its homes date from this century. Off North Donahue Drive, Yarbrough Farms has been building beside the Auburn University Club since the late 2000s and Camden Ridge is full of family houses; to the southeast, Moores Mill is custom homes around a private club. In houses like these the windows are good and the coverings on them often are not, and the rooms are big enough that the choice shows.

Cary Woods and Grove Hill sit in between: mid-century ranches under old trees a few minutes from campus, and 1990s brick and stucco in south Auburn, built under architectural controls. Where a neighborhood has design rules, a neutral color facing the street is the easy way through, and shades with a white or neutral back keep the outside consistent while the room side is whatever you like.

North College is the old Auburn: thirty-seven properties from 1848 to 1937, Greek Revival and Victorian, in a local historic district where changes to the outside of a house need the city's sign-off. Interior shutters and shades do not change the outside, so they are the natural way to treat those windows. Anything mounted outside, like a patio screen, is worth checking with the city first.

Four window treatments side by side: sage green cellular shades, wood-grain blind slats with grey cloth tapes, a covered porch with motorized screens, and a hand holding a shade remote.

Auburn is on Central time, an hour behind us in Georgia. When we set up your visit we will confirm it in your time, and if it falls on a home football weekend we are happy to pick another day.

What suits these homes

What suits Auburn homes

Plantation shutters
For the North College houses and the front rooms of the new builds. Mounted inside the frame, they leave the outside of a historic house untouched.
Motorized shades
For great rooms and two-story windows in the newer neighborhoods. Set on a schedule, they come down before the Alabama afternoon reaches the glass.
Cellular shades
For long, hot summers. The honeycomb traps a layer of air at the window, which keeps rooms cooler in August and warmer in January.
Faux wood blinds
For rental houses and condos near campus. Durable, cordless and easy to clean, and simple to reorder in the same size when one needs replacing.
