Window treatments in Barnesville, GA
Many of Barnesville's older houses date from its years as the Buggy Capital of the South, and they come with transoms, sidelights and arched windows that a stock blind cannot handle. We travel here for larger projects, about an hour from our Peachtree City workshop.

Transoms, arches and the Buggy Capital's old streets
Around 1900 Barnesville was making close to nine thousand buggies a year, and many of the town's older houses date from those years. The Thomaston Street historic district covers almost two hundred acres southwest of downtown, from the 1870s to the 1940s: Italianate, Queen Anne, Folk Victorian, Neoclassical, Craftsman and Tudor, with foursquares and gabled-ells among them. Greenwood Street runs from about 1880 to 1920, and Stafford and Georgia Avenues fill in the early 1900s.
Houses like these come with details a stock blind ignores. The Neoclassical houses have transoms and sidelights, and the Tudor Revival houses have arched windows. A transom is usually best left clear to let the light through, an arch needs a shutter or a shade made to its curve, and a sidelight needs something slim enough not to crowd the door.
Most of Barnesville sits on compact lots under mature trees, which the city's own plan points out, and that changes the light. Rooms under a heavy canopy are darker than their windows suggest, so the advice here leans toward light-filtering fabrics and blinds that open fully, not blackout in every room.

Buggy Days fills downtown on the third full weekend of September. If you live near the square, we will book your visit for a different weekend.

What suits these homes
What suits Barnesville homes
- Arch-top shutters
- For the arched windows in the Tudor Revival houses. Made to a template of the actual curve, so the shutter follows the arch instead of sitting square in front of it.
- Plantation shutters
- For the double-hung windows of the Victorian and Neoclassical houses on Thomaston and Greenwood Streets. They suit the period and make the most of the woodwork.
- Light-filtering roller shades
- For rooms under the big trees. They soften glare and give privacy while letting through what daylight the canopy allows.
- Cellular shades
- For older houses with drafty windows. The honeycomb insulates, which makes a real difference in an older room.
