The homes here
Greek Revival, Neel Reid and the mill villages
The Broad Street historic district, just west of downtown, holds houses from the early 1800s to the early 1900s: Greek Revival through Queen Anne to Craftsman, nearly all with front porches and set fairly close together. Along Vernon Road the houses run from before the Civil War to the 1920s, a few of them by Neel Reid, the architect of Hills & Dales. Windows in houses like these were made for their rooms, not to a catalog size, and they deserve shutters or shades made the same way.
The mill villages are the other half of LaGrange. Dixie, Hillside and Calumet were built for the mills from the 1890s to the 1940s: saltbox, shotgun and pyramid cottages with front porches, some of them restored. With houses close to the street and close to each other, privacy is the first thing to solve on the front windows, and a light-filtering shade or a faux wood blind solves it without darkening a small room.
West Point Lake is the third LaGrange: lake houses on a 25,000-acre Corps of Engineers reservoir, with the windows pointed at the water. Those rooms need glare control that keeps the view, usually a solar shade, and the porches that come with lake living are where a motorized patio screen earns its keep.

Hills & Dales, the Callaway estate on Vernon Road, was designed by Neel Reid, and so were a few of the houses along the same road. In a house of that age we measure every window on its own and suggest what suits the period, not what is quickest to order.

What suits these homes
What suits LaGrange homes
- Plantation shutters
- For the Greek Revival and Victorian houses on Broad Street and Vernon Road. Made to each window's own height and width, they suit rooms that were built before standard sizes existed.
- Faux wood blinds
- For the mill cottages of Dixie, Hillside and Calumet. Light, durable and cordless, they give a small front room privacy from the street without closing it in.
- Solar shades
- For lake houses on West Point Lake. They cut the glare off the water and the afternoon heat while leaving the view, which is the reason for the house.
- Motorized patio screens
- For the porch facing the lake. A screen that drops at the touch of a button keeps the bugs and the low sun out, then rolls away when you want the open air back.
