Lake Martin

Window treatments in Dadeville and on Lake Martin, AL

Lake Martin is the furthest town on our list, and we come for the lake houses: the big glass, the long porches and the second homes that sit empty for stretches at a time. Everything is measured and priced in a single visit, so there is no second trip before your order goes in.

The homes here

Built for the view, and the sun comes with it

Lake Martin houses face the water: big windows, long porches and open rooms, often for families who come up from Birmingham, Montgomery, Auburn or Atlanta for the summer. On the east shore around Dadeville, in places like StillWaters and Blue Creek, much of that glass looks west across the lake, which means the strongest sun of the day arrives late in the afternoon, straight off the water.

That is why the usual answer here is a solar shade: it cuts the glare and the heat and keeps the view. In a house that is empty for days at a time, motorizing it lets the shades come down on a schedule and keep the place cool while nobody is there. Materials matter more than usual too, because lake air is damp, and faux wood or composite holds up where real wood can warp.

The porches are the other half of the job. A porch facing the water is where the summer is actually spent, and a motorized patio screen keeps out the bugs and the low evening sun, then rolls away when you want the open air back. Dadeville itself has an older side as well: a historic district running from the 1840s to the mid-1900s, where the windows are more a shutter conversation than a motorized one.

Four window treatments side by side: sage green cellular shades, wood-grain blind slats with grey cloth tapes, a covered porch with motorized screens, and a hand holding a shade remote.

Most of Lake Martin is on Central time and a long way from anywhere, so we treat it as one trip: every window and the porch measured in a single visit, with the price before we leave. If it is a second home, tell us when you will be there and we will plan around you.

Taupe solar shades lowered partway around a covered porch with a hanging swing bed.

What suits these homes

What suits lake houses

Solar shades
For the glass facing the water. They take the glare and the afternoon heat off the room and leave the view, which is what the house is for.
Motorized shades
For tall windows and for houses that stand empty between visits. On a schedule, they close before the sun comes round and open again in the morning, with nobody there to do it.
Motorized patio screens
For the porch on the water. One button drops a screen against the bugs and the low sun; another rolls it away.
Faux wood shutters
The shutter look for bedrooms and baths, in a composite that shrugs off damp lake air instead of warping in it.
