The homes here

Bay windows, mill cottages and a college town

Carrollton keeps more of its old houses than most towns its size. The South Carrollton historic district runs from the 1870s to the 1930s, with Victorian Gothic and Queen Anne houses on Dixie and Bradley Streets, then Neoclassical homes and Craftsman bungalows. High ceilings and bay windows come with that territory. A bay is measured window by window, because no two sides are quite the same, and a tall double-hung wants a shutter or a shade built to its full height rather than cut down from a stock size.

Mandeville Mill Village tells the other half of the story: around 150 one-story mill houses from 1900 and 1908, shotguns, pyramid cottages and bungalows on Burson Avenue, Aycock Street and the lettered avenues. Rooms that size are better served by a light faux wood blind or a cellular shade than by anything heavy. The old Mandeville and Lawler mills are lofts now, with the factory-sized windows that come with them.

Then there is the newer Carrollton. Oak Mountain grew up around its golf course from the late 1980s, new houses are still going up between the older ones in Sunset Hills, and subdivisions like Whooping Creek Estates are brand new. In a new house the windows often arrive bare or with whatever the builder chose, and that is the moment to choose properly, before every room is arranged around something temporary.

Four window treatments side by side: sage green cellular shades, wood-grain blind slats with grey cloth tapes, a covered porch with motorized screens, and a hand holding a shade remote.

If you live in one of the converted mills, the windows are the point of the place. A stack of blinds across a factory window looks busy; one wide roller or solar shade per opening keeps the industrial look and still closes the room at night.

Taupe roller shades with matching fascias, raised high on three double-hung windows.

What suits these homes

What suits Carrollton homes

Plantation shutters
For the tall double-hungs and bay windows of South Carrollton. Built to the height of each window and hinged to clear its neighbor in a bay, they look like part of the house rather than something added to it.
Faux wood blinds
For the mill cottages and the rooms that see steam. They will not warp in a kitchen or a bathroom, and they come cordless, which matters in a house with small children in it.
Roller and solar shades
For the loft windows in the old mills. One clean shade per factory-sized opening: solar fabric where you want to keep the view, blackout where you need to sleep.
Cellular shades
For the 1980s and 1990s houses around Oak Mountain and any room that runs hot in summer. The honeycomb traps a layer of air at the glass, one of the simplest comfort upgrades a window can have.
