The homes here

Two-story foyers, and a town still building

A big share of Douglasville's houses date from the 1990s, and the 1990s house came with a two-story foyer: a tall window over the front door that lights the stairs and that nobody can reach. Chapel Hills, built around its golf course from 1992, is full of traditional two-story brick homes from that era. That high window is the classic case for a motorized shade, set once and run from a switch, a remote or a phone instead of a ladder.

Tributary, near Sweetwater Creek State Park, is the town's newest idea of a neighborhood: a planned community of about 1,500 acres built around walkable streets and sidewalks. Front windows that look straight onto the people walking past need privacy that still lets the light in, which is what top-down, bottom-up cellular shades do: the top opens for daylight while the bottom stays closed.

In between are the streets built as the town grew by about three quarters from 2000 to 2020, and the building still going on at places like Tuscany Hills and Anneewakee Trails. In a new house the windows are a blank slate, and the choice made in the first month tends to stay for years, so it is worth seeing real samples in your own light before you decide.

Four window treatments side by side: sage green cellular shades, wood-grain blind slats with grey cloth tapes, a covered porch with motorized screens, and a hand holding a shade remote.

If your house has a window over the front door, that is the one to solve first. It is too high to reach and too bright to leave bare, and a motorized shade on a timer means nobody has to think about it again.

What suits these homes

What suits Douglasville homes

Motorized shades
For two-story foyers, stairwells and great-room windows. A shade you cannot reach is a shade that never moves; one on a schedule earns its keep every day.
Top-down, bottom-up cellular shades
For street-facing windows in walkable neighborhoods like Tributary. Daylight comes in over the top while the bottom keeps the room private, and the honeycomb insulates as well.
Plantation shutters
For the front rooms of a traditional brick two-story. They suit the architecture of Chapel Hills and the streets like it, and from outside they read as part of the house.
Faux wood blinds
For the bedrooms, kitchen and baths of a house being done in stages. Moisture does not bother them, and they come cordless.
