Window treatments in McDonough, GA
McDonough grew up fast around a square that dates to 1823, and most of its houses are now old enough to be due a rethink at the windows. We travel here for larger projects, about 45 minutes across Fayette County from our Peachtree City workshop.

The homes here
The Geranium City grew up fast
McDonough went from about eight and a half thousand people in 2000 to more than twenty-nine thousand by 2020, and nearly half its houses were built in the 2000s alone. Lake Dow and Lakehaven grew up around their lakes in the 1990s, and The Farm spread out on big lots, some close to three acres, in the Ola school zone. Houses from those years brought two-story foyers and great rooms with them, and twenty-odd years on, whatever went on their windows at the start is due for a rethink.
Around the square it is a different town. The McDonough historic district covers about two hundred acres around the courthouse, Late Victorian and early 1900s, and Lawrenceville Street runs northeast from the square with Queen Anne cottages, Craftsman bungalows and postwar ranches built between 1888 and 1960. Those are the houses where a plantation shutter looks as if it was always there.
McDonough has a real share of townhomes too, at newer communities like Bowers Farm. A townhome is its own kind of window job: mostly front and back windows, neighbors close on either side, and privacy and daylight that have to come through the same glass. Light-filtering shades that let the day in without showing the room are usually the answer.

Henry County was one of the fastest-growing counties in the country in the 1990s, and McDonough's houses went up in a hurry. If yours is one of them, there is no need to do the whole house at once: start with the rooms you live in and match the rest later.

What suits these homes
What suits McDonough homes
- Faux wood blinds
- The straight replacement for whatever came with the house. Sturdier than vinyl, unbothered by a kitchen or a bath, and cordless.
- Motorized shades
- For the two-story foyers and great-room windows of the 1990s and 2000s. Out of reach is out of use, unless a motor does the work.
- Light-filtering shades
- For townhomes and any window close to the neighbors. Daylight comes in; the view of your room does not go out.
- Plantation shutters
- For the houses around the square and on Lawrenceville Street, where they suit the period, and for the front rooms of a traditional two-story anywhere in town.
